Highlights So Far …

BarCampHyd

Ramesh (Progress Software) defines Web 2.0 trying to get everybody on the same level. He discussed about Key Principle, Factors and Drivers of this. He also mentions the increase of information noise due to blogs and probably an efficient search engine can address this problem. He futher strengthened my view that web 2.0 is not just about AJAX and Rich UI but its about Business Logic and Rich User Experience and covered all the basics of Web 2.0.

jay pullur CEO pramati

Moving on from the Tech side to the Business side Jay Phullur (CEO Pramati) nicely defines Web 2.0 as a Read/Wrtie Web and talked about Business models which can/has made influence. They can be technology focused or Network effect focused. The basic question he posed was Why Web 2.0 companies not coming out of India? which leads us to a more basic question which participants asked. How to make money from Web 2.0 ideas?

rajan from advetta

Then, Rajan (Advetta) went ahead and took us for a drive in Economics, a move from n^2 to 2^n and the importance of attention. He started with a line "information abundance may result in scarcity of attention" which lead to Blog noise and tagging and Attention gathering. To me the presentation seemed pretty inspired by The Matrix (ofcourse, a techie).

Followed by was a nice rich presentation on Tangible User Interface by Sharad Singh Solanki (SAS). Couple of videos were really cool and involved a lot of innovative hardware. I still feel there is time when we will have those innovative hardwares to communicate with web and will be used in our day today lives. As of now lets see when a wireless enabled iPod is launched which will be able to download/stream/rate/suggest/share/review music on the fly without the middleman (as in computer).

Vishal Garg (IIITH) got an idea similar to that of Open Conference. He calls it Open Journal and how authors can make money from their articles and papers by eliminating the publisher who ends up making more money than anybody else in the chain.

Dr. kamal

Kamal Karlapalem (IIITH) discusses an idea of a MahaSystem (MeraSystem.com) which will eliminate the need of a desktop computer. Basically a thinClient frontend and Grid of servers as a backend which will take care of optimization, data management and information/knowledge extration. His idea was to shift OS from a personal computer to the web and leave the computer as a thin Client to just input and output data. I guess people have already thought a lot on this and there are lot many issues implementing it and making money from this.

Rajiv and Pavitar (Pramati) talks about Xforms. What as XForms, Why we need it, How they are implement and the benefit over basic HTML forms. Short, Geeky and Fast.

Prabodh (Oracle) made a wildcard walk-in and talked about the general stuff and took us for a very long Recap of basics of AJAX and the problems in moving existing Web 1.0 systems to Web 2.0. Some stuff which his company is doing … how Oracle was the first to implement AJAX in their systems and stuff like partial refresh. Request/Response is done by AJAX but he stressed Push, which i guess is already implemented and later on we saw a demo of Push technology from CORDYS.

D Anandhakrishnan (CORDYS) gave a presentation and i must say it was indeed humorous specially the AJAX for his wife part. It was more to do with problems faced with DHTML, making web layouts and maintaining them. The main theme of his presentation revolved about how XForms can solve all the problems. Later he gave a demo of their XForm enterprise application development suite which runs on a browser. He thinks AJAX is rocket science and needs a lot of expertise for developers to make apps on it and a development platform something like Eclipse or Visual Studio is must. The funniest part was when somebody asked him, In what language is your suite written in? And his answer was: DHTML and CSS šŸ™‚

Then Kiran (Progress) is speaking about Eclipse plugins, DOM inspecter, Integrated browwser and debugger for javascript and AJAX applications.

stardotstar blogging live

*.* in action and blogging live, conference still going on … and i am defenitely gonna be here for an hour more …. reason? free pizza's šŸ˜€

Sumeet from Yahoo

Now its Sumeet (Yahoo!) who is going deep into Y! UI design libraries. Shared a link developer.yahoo.com which probably most of us have already visited. The logic is simple, take open sourced UI libraries (Javascripts) from Yahoo! use them into your Web Interfaces and make them rich. To make the presentation (which just had one monolithic B/W web page) more intresting he is throwing in whtever new is going on @ Yahoo!, Avatar sharing page, Yahoo! widgets, or the new Yahoo Mail interface which is really good but looked much like Outlook and Kahuna (Hotmail beta).

He is also giving some Goodies (i guess a Yahoo! wallet and a pen) to all those asking genuine questions. Ranta got one for asking why his yahoo account got blocked. I didnt had time to ask even that. If not blogging then would have surely asked why they are so lagging in integrating all their stuff (search, messenger, mail, 360, Flickr, delicious) into one. M$ and Google have definitely taken a headstart into this. Even he is blogging live and can be read here.

And now its Sunder (dimdim) who seem to be going off track to the theme of Web 2.0 and talking a lot on his experiences with a Startup and Rentchecks šŸ˜‰

And with that we come to an end of a successfull Barcamp.  This was just the Gist of the unconference and much more was discussed and the Links will be provided to the slides as soon as they are uploaded on the Barcamp wiki.

Oh, i just forgot to mention the Pizza's …

Update:

HydTechBlog has a nice post on the same while Rajan one of the organizers and speakers shares his thoughts about the events and his own talkKunal blogs about the proceedings as bullets and his observations while CmdrBuzz tries to make another excuse of the low turnout of IIITians AGAIN at one more on Campus event.

How this WebOS is different from any virtual hosting of OS on VMWare? and if I have to use this from my browser, where is that browser running if I dont have any CPU with me? I mean how we are trying to eliminate a client CPU here?

  4. stardotstar Says:

thats was the point raised during the discussion too. We cant eliminate the CPU, we can make it very light. The benefit does not lie in making it cheaper but making your data accessible from anywhere and make it interact with other web systems easily.
